5 Questions To Bring Your Brand Into Focus

1.

Why does the business exist?

Write your own answer first. Beyond the product or service, what do you want to make possible for customers? What should people be able to count on from your company?

Keep this answer to yourself for now so it doesn’t shape the feedback you gather.

2.

How does the team understand the business?

Ask one person from each level of the company, from leadership through junior or frontline roles:

  • “In your own words, what does this company do for its customers?”

  • “What should customers and colleagues be able to count on from how we work?”

3.

Where is the friction?

Compare their answers with your own.

Where do they differ? Then look for a specific moment in the company’s communication or day-to-day work where that difference shows up.

4.

Which three values should guide the business?

Choose values that would help address the friction you found. For each one, write what it looks like in action.

5.

How do those values land with the team?

Share the values and their examples with the same people. Ask:

  • “Does this feel true to the company at its best?

  • Where do you see it in practice?

  • Where does it fall short?”

Use their answers to test the language, then decide as the leader, what is the best fit for the company.
